Pediatric Cardiology Fellowship

The pediatric cardiology fellowship program is a three-year training program approved by the American Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). We accept applications through ERAS (main page for applicants, pediatric cardiology programs). Our fellowship program has expanded to have 2 fellows every year going forward

About our fellowship

Our fellowship program is a multi-disciplinary, collaborative effort at the Children's Heart Center and UMMC designed to give a robust clinical training to aspiring pediatric cardiologists coupled with meaningful mentored research and quality improvement experience. It offers an integrated educational program that prepares advanced trainees for careers in pediatric cardiology.

Our program also lays a strong foundation for further training if so desired in advanced sub-disciplines of pediatric cardiology. The educational program provides progressive responsibility in patient care across the three years of fellowship training.

We have created a fellowship program that offers strong clinical and didactic educational experiences in all facets of pediatric cardiology, including:

• Non-invasive imaging
• Cardiac catheterization
• Electrophysiology
• Cardiac critical care
• Inpatient and outpatient cardiology
• Heart failure and transplantation
• Exercise physiology
• Preventative cardiology
• Pulmonary hypertension
• Cardiac pathology
• Adult congenital heart disease

Research and infrastructure

The Children's Heart Center and UMMC offer many opportunities for research (clinical, basic, and translational). Our faculty members are involved in numerous scholarly activities including retrospective and prospective research, as well as experiments in accredited animal laboratory. These are all fertile grounds for research by trainees. Our faculty have extramural grants funding including from NIH. There are intra-mural funding opportunities available for trainees.

Each fellow is paired with an appropriate research mentor (faculty member) and has a scholarship oversight committee to assess the progress and support the fellow in scholarly activities. Quality improvement opportunities are available to the fellows under attending supervision.

There are six separate schools within the campus of UMMC (Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Health Related Professions, Graduate Studies in the Health Sciences and Population Health) that offer opportunities for collaborative research.

The Medical Center has extremely well-funded research support. A novel asset for research is the Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW), a software program that combines data from patient records from UMMC Hospitals and Clinics via the Epic program, Mississippi State Public Health Department records, and 15 years of UMMC Emergency Department data. The Clinical Research Support Program (CRSP) provides clinical research and trial support staff, research coordinators and nurses to assist investigators. UMMC has recently developed a partnership with Mayo Clinic that will strengthen the research and training programs. There are currently several ongoing NIH-funded translational research programs at UMMC.

There are three COBRE (centers of biomedical research excellence) grants awarded to UMMC that have helped develop several research centers, including the Mississippi Center of Excellence in Perinatal Research, Mississippi Center for Obesity Research, Cardiovascular-Renal Research Center, and Cardiorenal and Metabolic Diseases Research Center.
